This is the chronicle of a family learning about the world by being a part of it.

We’ve been interested in alternative models of education for several years—even well before we had children of our own. As artists and educators and parents, we believe that creating spaces for meaningful conversation and engagement with others and our environments is paramount to being fully present in the world. In order to encourage these values in our children, we’ve taken on the challenge of supporting our kids’ learning and development by integrating them within our community and connecting them to a broader range of resources, experiences, and mentors not typically found in conventional compulsory schooling.

This website serves as documentation of this experiment. We feel it’s absolutely important for our kids to be able to look back and understand our ¬†motivations for how we’ve designed this approach to their education, as well as to trace the story of our growth and journey through life together. We also hope that our stories—the challenges, accomplishments, joys, missteps, and frustrations—might be helpful for others embarking on a similar path.
